Austrian kitchen pantry cupboard , farmhouse kitchen , painted front, original condition
Bought at Austrian antique show
This is an antique alpine cupboard that is constructed of wood with forged iron hardware and hand painted decoration to surface that is purported to originate from Austria. It is a provincial, folk art style furniture piece from the 18th century that is dated 1760. The hand painted surface decoration has faded significantly and the piece overall appears to have been exposed to the elements over time. The painted decoration is religious in theme; the top panel has a stylized depiction of the Sacred Heart and the bottom panel has IHS, a Catholic Christogram for the name Jesus. This religious theme may reflect on the career of the original owner. The estimate is based on the overall condition and age and utilizes actual past recorded auction sales of comparables.
