Wood. 20"D x 42"W x 41"H . Fold down front. Cubbies and drawers in desk area. Dresser drawer bottom on the back of center drawer - Julia Bech 1888 On the bottom of the upper right drawer -Liddie M Halsey
Owned by my fathers grandmother.
This is an antique, Chippendale style, slant front desk with amphitheatre interior when the slat front is opened over 4 graduated drawers and bracket carved feet. The wood appears to be maple. The desk was hand constructed with fine, thin dovetailing. It is made in what is referred to as a vernacular manner, meaning likely not produced by a furniture guild or atelier. There is a past owner name and year written on the underside of a drawer which states Julia Beck 1888. This is more than likely older than 1888 and could date to the late 18th century, from the Georgian or Federal era and possibly American from New England. The estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail 'asking prices' can be higher and vary.
Photo of back of drawer says Julia Beck 1888. No idea how old the desk is. All we know is that Julia wrote her name and date on the drawer. Dresser drawers do not lock. Hope the photo shows that. Fold down desk does have a lock and key. The metal piece at the top that engages the lock is missing. No markings I could find.
Amazing heirloom!
Please add a clear, in-focus image of a corner of a drawer as well as a close up of the a drawer pull and lock escutcheon (metal pieces) on the front of a drawer as well as a view inside the drawer where these would connect through to the other side. Also check the locks at the top inside edge of the drawer for any stamps or marks.
