This is a French Bouillotte lamp dating from the late 18th to century, made of bronze/brass with a steel center rod. It features two candle holders, a pierced gallery, and original tools hanging on chains—including a candle snuffer, wick trimmers, and additional accessories. The lamp has a rich patina consistent with its age and use. It is missing the original shade but remains in strong antique condition with no major structural damage. The construction and tooling suggest a handcrafted or early machine-crafted piece typical of Louis XVI or Empire styles. No maker’s marks visible. Acquired from a descendant of the historic family collection tied to Soderstrom Castle in Peoria Heights, Illinois.
About 26” tall
Hi Robin,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Bouillotte lamps were commonly placed on bouillotte tables, small round tables with marble tops designed specifically for the card game of the same name. The adjustable shade allowed players to focus the light on their cards while minimizing glare. While originally designed for candle light, many modern bouillotte lamps have been adapted for electricity.
This looks to me more like a 19th Century object rather than 18th Century, though the form was invented in the late 18th Century, in France.
While this may have provenance to the Chubbuck family, that isn't enough to boost its interest past average market value; these lamps currently sell for between $150 and $250.
