12.5 inches wide by 16 inches tall. Oil on canvas painting of Jesus. This is unsigned. Attached to the stretcher with nails that appear, at least to me, to be hand forged. Was told by an appraiser that it’s 18th century or earlier.

Dear Jesse,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. My sincere apologies for the delay with the apprisal.
The presented object appears to be a painting made in oil paint on canvas with the measurements of 16 x 12.5 inches. The painting depicts Jesus Christ with a gesture of blessing and looking up in the sky probably to the godfather. The painting could be cut to a smaller format during the decades and this would be one detail of a bigger scene. The style could indicate a Spanish or Italian artist of the late 17th or 18th century.
This piece is in bad to medium condition and there is damage in the canvas visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 250 to 500 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.
With kind regards,
George
Dear Jesse,
This is a difficult question. A restoration could cost more than half of the value of the painting and increases the value around the amount of investment in this restoration. Perhaps even more because the craquelure is very strong and the quality a restoration could be done has also a wide rank in workmanship and the price. I recommend an estimate of cost from different restorers nearby.
With kind regards,
George
Thank you for your help. I’ll look into it.
Dear Jesse,
You are very welcome.
With kind regards,
George
Do you think that any restoration work would increase the value enough to be worth it?
