Pearl handle officers sword theid reich
Hi Keith,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
I can make out the Solingen mark on the ricasso but not much else, and nothing tying this to the Nazi Third Reich. It does, however, bear close resemblances to a Second Empire French (1852-1870) administrator's sword, shown here: https://www.bertrand-malvaux.com/p/18546/epee-d-officier-d-administration-second-empire.html
Solingen is a city in Germany renowned for its long history and expertise in manufacturing blades, including swords, knives, and other cutlery. The city is often referred to as the "City of Blades" due to the centuries-old tradition of skilled knife and sword makers. The handle is probably mother-of-pearl veneered (or bone) rather than all-pearl.
Assuming this is French, and third quarter 19th Century, related swords unattributed to individual sword makers and without provenance, have been selling at auction for between $300 and $600 these days.
Please let us know if you have additional items to appraise, or questions/concerns, and thank you again for using Mearto.
