1943 F12 copper penny from the Philadelphia Mint (no mint mark)
11 November 2023
Description

According to Google, the Copper Cent is valued between $215,000, and the highest is at $435,000 if in Brown coloration. - Jan 18, 2023 From the accompanying pictures it is plain to see that this one is in fair to poor condition. However a friend who once owned a Metal exchange / coin shop said that the penny is worth a dollar. Therefore, I'm hoping for some clarification. Also this is a friend's coin, and if there's good news about the value, she and her kids will be receiving it for the holidays. Thank you

Dimensions

According to Google: The coin is 0.75 inches (19.05 mm) in diameter and 0.0598 inches (1.52 mm) in thickness.

What does this mean?

Hi Andrew,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
AllCoinValues.com is a more accurate website for coin values. While the sources for Google may be correct, there can also be quite a bit of mis-information retained by sites who show up on a Google search. 1943 Copper pennies are also readily forged.

1943 Wheat Pennies can range in value quite considerably, beginning with $.20 (20 cents) for a low-grade STEEL penny to $3 for a high-grade STEEL penny (steel pennies were very common). The chances for this penny to be steel are quite high.
If this were a BRONZE penny, the value would range from about $60,000 for a poor grade to $465,000 for a high-grade example (only about 7 believed to exist).
This website does not provide any current values for COPPER pennies because they are so rare, with only about 40 known to exist (https://www.usmint.gov/news/press-releases/19990308-special-1943-copper-penny#:~:text=Nearly%20all%20circulating%20pennies%20at,known%20to%20remain%20in%20existence); the record price for a Copper penny is $82,500.

Does your penny stick to a magnet? If it does, it is NOT copper but may still have value.
The value of this penny hinges significantly on a) what it is made of and b) what the grade is. I am unable to tell you what kind of metal this penny is made of and can't verify if the date has been modified or not. Additionally, grading this is outside the scope of this appraisal.

Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:

A 1943 Lincoln wheat penny
mint mark indecipherable
CONDITION: ungraded
PROVENANCE: unknown
$1-3*

The penny is magnetic unfortunately. Thank you Delia!
