I can't tell if the lid and front plaques are mother of pearl or metal - I've said this is mother-of-pearl but if it's different please let me know.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
A Victorian mother-of-pearl inlaid rosewood document box
English or American, 19th Century
Of rectangular form, the hinged lid with a plaque inscribed "Ellie," the front with a diamond-form mother-of-pearl escutcheon; the interior with green felt lining.
4 inches high by 8 inches wide by 5 inches deep
CONDITION: wear commensurate to age. This would have had a lift-out-tray that is now lacking.
