This is a vintage exhibition poster for “20th Century Portraits” — an art exhibition held at the National Portrait Gallery, London, from 9 June to 17 September 1978. The central image is by Gustav Klimt, titled “Portrait of a Lady” (sometimes called “Portrait of a Young Woman”). Klimt’s richly patterned, decorative style — especially the golds, blues, and sinuous forms — fits perfectly with the show’s focus on modern portraiture. The border includes names of major modernist artists: Picasso, Matisse, Derain, Gris, Modigliani, Kokoschka, and others — all artists whose portraiture defined early 20th-century art.
