Not sure of the origin but came from an inheritance from a person that traveled with the military and collected usually high quality items. Appears to be missing a smaller blade that would fit into the scabbard. Indicators are oriental by design double edge for the first 8 inches, Well Built.
29.5 inches overall see pics
Hi Douglas,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The decorative elements on this sword - the incised figure on the ricasso, as well as the leafy elements and the shell-shaped mount - point to this being made for show rather than to be used in battle, and likely made in the late 19th Century during the Gothic revival period. Most swords *should* have the maker's name(s) marked somewhere and I'll be honest that this is lower in value because a name isn't identified; the loss of the smaller blade also lowers the value too, to :$150-250 in "as is" condition.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
An antique Gothic Revival style sword and scabbard
Unattributed maker, in the European style, late 19th Century
The straight single-edged blade with ebonized ricasso inlaid on one side with a crowned figure and foliate elements, foliate elements on the other side, with a brass shell-form cross guard and shaped ebonized handle with brass bosses, the scabbard with brass locket and chape, with a fitting for a dagger or boot knife.
29-1/2 inches overall length
CONDITION: With some wear commensurate to age.
PROVENANCE: Inherited
$150-250*
*represents a fair-market value for auction purposes; retail or asking price may vary.

Hi Delia
Here are more pictures as requested. One side appears to have a hunter and the other an animal that starts out thin but gets larger. Also included is a picture of the markings on the spline of the sword by the handle. Let me know if there is anything else needed.
Thanks Doug
