385 cms x 255 cms
Hello, this item is a watercolor painting attributed to Albert Namatjira (1902–1959), one of the most celebrated Aboriginal artists of the 20th century. Namatjira was a Western Arrernte man from Hermannsburg in Central Australia and is best known for his luminous watercolors depicting the Australian outback, particularly the MacDonnell Ranges. His work introduced Indigenous perspectives to mainstream Australian art, bridging Western painting techniques with Aboriginal traditions. The subject here, with a mountainous backdrop and detailed trees, is highly characteristic of his work. However, the listed dimensions (385 x 255 cm) seem implausible for a watercolor and likely contain an error, as Namatjira’s works are usually much smaller, often under 60 cm in width. Careful verification of the signature and provenance is crucial, as Namatjira’s works are frequently forged.
The market value of genuine Albert Namatjira watercolors has grown significantly, with auction results in recent years ranging from $15,000 to $50,000 USD depending on size, subject, and condition, with top works occasionally exceeding $100,000 USD. If authenticated, this piece would be highly valuable within both Australian and international markets, appealing to collectors of Aboriginal art and modernist watercolors. I strongly recommend professional authentication, particularly considering the frequency of misattributions, to determine if this is an original work by Namatjira or a later copy in his style.
