This is a coin from the Himyarite Kingdom in Yemen. I would like to confirm its value and whether it is rare or not.
It’s a golden coin, I am not sure about the weight but I think it’s 3.5 g or 4.5 g
Hi Erkan,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
This appears to be a medieval Islamic gold coin, most consistent with a gold dinar from the Almoravid or Almohad period (11th–13th century) in North Africa and Islamic Spain. The distinctive geometric square-within-square pattern with lines forming a lattice is characteristic of coinage from the Almohad Caliphate (c. 1121–1269). These coins circulated widely in Al‑Andalus and North Africa and were often slightly irregular in shape and made from a high-purity gold minted throughout North Africa and Spain.
The Arabic inscriptions are very worn or stylized, making them appear almost abstract. The cross-grid pattern you see is actually the square calligraphic border structure typical of Almohad coins.
This could also be a dinar from the earlier Almoravid dynasty (c. 1040–1147), whose coins sometimes show similar geometry, though they usually contain clearer Arabic text.
Weighing in between 3.5 and 4.5 grams speaks well to the authenticity of this coin: full dinars were just about 4.5 grams and this has worn, with some loss in total weight.
You'd need to have a jeweler confirm the quality (karat) of the gold and examination under a microscope might identify script or marks that would more accurately pinpoint the maker, mint city and/or narrow the date range but from these photos, it would be worth at least $250 and as much as $800 depending on condition, mint and readability of inscription(s).
Please let us know if you have additional items to appraise, or questions/concerns, and thank you again for using Mearto.
