A Japanese Metal Pot with Etching and 10 porcelain cups
18 August 2021
Description

These two pieces are part of a lot of items. The metal pot has an inner pot with a spout and a handle. The metal is not iron. It also has dragons etched on the outside and what looks like a Japanese character on the sides. The metal part measures 4.5 by 4.5. The little blue and white porcelain cups are 2 and 1/4 inches high and three inches wide. The cups may have a mark in the center/imtererior of each cup. They do not have any other hallmark. Please comment if this could be lead. Thanks.

Hi Delia:
Several items were in the auction lot together. So, I know they came from the same source. I just am not sure if they were used together or the precise relationship.
And the pot did not respond to a magnet. Definitely not magnetic. My brother says it is lead. He thinks he knows everything. I sure hope not. Are there other likely metal types? Aluminum? Too heavy to be tin, I think.

Thanks, Rhonda,
The pot could be zinc and I think the insert is pewter, neither of which are magentic. I think the cups are Chinese so probably better to be sold separately.
I hope that helps...!

That is a great help.I did not think of pewter or zinc. I will separate the cups from the pot. What is the insurance estimate?
Thanks again.

Delia Aug 19, 13:50 UTC

The standard industry multiplier for converting fair-market (Mearto's values) into insurance is either three times the low estimate or twice the high estimate (usually, these are about the same value).

Do you have any ideas as to what is happening inside of these cups? Perplexed.

Delia Aug 19, 13:58 UTC

I'm not sure I know what you mean - they look OK in the photos.

Rhonda guess Aug 19, 14:30 UTC

I mean the artwork. There are little cascading shapes and there are little animals or insects painted inside. Or, that's what I think I see.
Thanks.

I've seen that sort of stylized decoration on Korean blue and white pottery, where the decoration isn't very crisply painted before glazing. Without marks I felt it was better to call the cups more vaguely "Asian" rather than assign a national attribution.
