I bought this mask along with a couple of others from a collector around 15 years ago. It has been in storage since then. I can't remember the origin of this mask - the seller did provide this at the time. It was sold as an antique and feels old. It is hand carved wood, there are metal rings through ear lobes and chin. There is old string material through nose, around the necks of the figures on top of the head, and around the waist of one of them. There is newer string on back which was used by seller to hang on wall. Dimensions: Length 44cm at its' longest point Width 24cm at its' widest point

Hello,
Your item is an antique African tribal mask, likely originating from the West African region, possibly from the Baule or Dan peoples of Côte d’Ivoire. These cultures are known for their elaborately carved masks used in ceremonies, rituals, and social functions. The presence of two carved figures on top of the mask suggests an ancestral or spiritual significance, as similar motifs are often associated with protective spirits or fertility symbols. The detailed carving, including the metal rings on the earlobes and chin, as well as the scarification patterns, aligns with traditional African aesthetic practices.
In terms of age, the piece appears to have significant wear, with an aged patina and signs of traditional use, such as the old string material on the nose and around the figures. These elements indicate it could be an authentic ritual mask rather than a tourist market reproduction. However, without more provenance details, it is difficult to determine its precise origin with absolute certainty. The craftsmanship suggests it was created for ceremonial purposes rather than mere decoration, adding to its authenticity and potential value.
