Hi Brendan,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Chic Sale (1885–1936) was an American vaudeville comedian, character actor, and author best remembered for his hugely popular rustic monologue character “Lem Puddler.” In that act, he portrayed an elderly, homespun storyteller seated in a rocking chair, spinning humorous rural tales. The character became so well known that Sale adapted it into a book and later a film, helping cement his reputation in early 20th-century American comedy.
Chic Sale’s connection to Chaplin and Coogan comes through the silent film The Kid, directed by and starring Charlie Chaplin. Sale appeared in The Kid in a small supporting role. The film famously co-starred Jackie Coogan as the abandoned child adopted by Chaplin’s Tramp character. Although Sale was not central to the plot, he was part of the broader ensemble cast that contributed to the film’s comic atmosphere.
At the time, Chaplin was the world’s biggest film star, and The Kid became one of the most important silent films ever made—launching Jackie Coogan to international fame. Sale’s participation places him within that early Hollywood circle of silent-era performers.

Because it's not signed, the uncropped original version of this photo would be worth about $100 but because it's cropped, it's worth less - at most $50.
