The sculpture is wood, aged with scrapes to surface. It features a seated female subject. She wears a beaded shell necklace and bracelet. It measure 19 ins. x 6 in.s x 5. It may weigh 8 lb.s, constructed of a light weight wood or very aged.
Item 2 - Seated woman is a part of multiple african wood sculptures. My understanding that the prior owner travel Africa, and collected extensively, to include skins and animal perserved for display. Some of the itmes could not be purchased ** Some years ago i was directed to the text " Out Of Africa", translated by Marjolijn de Jager, from Francoise Stoullig -Marin. The items from the Ivory Coast appear near identical. Also Baoule, Metro. Museum Of Art, N. Y.
Hello Floyd.
Thank you for your continued appraisal inquiries with MeArto. I enjoy the range of items you have submitted. I'll be appraising your recent African sculptures items.
This item appears to be a seated fertility figure in the style of the Baule people of Ivory Coast. The wooden carving depicts a seated female figure, who appears to be in a pregnant state. The item does present some wear and condition concerns, such as chips, discoloration, and surface wear.
Unfortunately, dating an object like this is very difficult by photos. The African market has shown a spike in modern day forgeries. Therefore, the best way to determine age would be provenance and an in-person examination.
The estimate provided is based on recent auction estimates and results of undated Baule fertility figures in similar dimensions. Thank you. Please take care and stay safe.
Thanks !
