American Encaustic Tiling Company AETCo SET
15 May 2019
Description

American Encaustic Tiling Company 1875-1935, Zanesville Ohio, these tiles may have been made in their California plant. Tiles are 1-1/2” X 6” X 1/2”. Four tiles comprise a “Knight with Helmet & Feather Plumes” design. Raised embossing. Six colors are used: Pink, Yellow/Gold, Blue, Brown, Light Green, Dark Green. There are 53 SETS of four tiles in the whole set. Whole set = 53 sets X 4 individual tiles. (Linear feet if the 53 sets were used as a border would be 53 feet.) The tiles were taken from their original installation in a San Francisco “Arts & Crafts” style home. The tiles are Arts & Crafts? or Art Nouveau? Have not found them pictured in any of the American Encaustic Tiling Co original catalogs posted online; would like to identify such a reference (year, pattern number, names etc). Overall condition of the tiles is “Very Good” as would be expected from tiles removed in a careful salvage. While many are near mint, others have imperfections (chips, crazing, small pitting) which could benefit from light repair/ restoration such as fill-in, overpaint touch-up etc. Tiles are marked AETCo. I am aware that such a large and complete set of AETCo matching tiles is extremely uncommon indeed.

Provenance

As given in description, a California seller who stated they were removed from an Arts & Crafts/ Mission style house in San Francisco about 15 years ago.

What does this mean?

Dear Geo,

Thank you for your request. The presented object appears to be a collection or convolute of Art Nouveau tiles. The convolute consists out of 53 sets of 4 tiles which complete an image. All tiles are stamped by the American Encaustic Tiling Company. These tiles, especially with Art Nouveau motifs, are sold on the auction market. Collections of tiles like this are very rare on the market and there are few buyers so the selling could be complicated. Each complete image or set should be estimated at around 100 to 200 USD.
This piece is in good condition and there are no serious damages visible.
An estimation would be between 5.000 to 10.000 USD.
This estimation is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and vary.

With kind regards,
Georg
