James Sankowski (1949-2017) was the New York State potter behind Ballstone Lake Pottery. He earned his MFA in ceramics from Bowling Green State University - a leading center and incubator for contemporary ceramic artists - and maintained his studio from 1975 until his death. His work appeared in Ceramics Monthly, Studio Potter and The Art of Contemporary American Pottery, and he participated in national exhibitions including the Smithsonian Craft Show.

He rejected the idea that functional pottery was somehow artistically inferior. His stated goal (www.ballstonlakepottery.com) was to make pots that were both useful and transcendent - objects whose form, design, craftsmanship and tactile qualities enhanced everyday life.

At auction, small signed pieces of his typically sell for between $150 and $250.
