I inherited it from a ling fPtime friend and she said it was from the 1600’s. Being that old, I’m not sure how to describe it’s condition. The colors are vibrant and it is not brittle at all. The first photo is the from it it and the second one is the back side of the rug.

Hello,
This item is a late 18th century Chinese rug featuring a traditional design that reflects the rich cultural heritage and symbolism often found in Chinese textile art. The rug’s central field is dominated by a yellow background, which is a color historically associated with the emperor and the concept of royalty or power in Chinese culture. The color scheme, along with the design motifs, suggests that this rug was intended to convey good fortune, prosperity, and longevity, common themes in Chinese decorative arts.
Design Analysis:
The rug’s central motif features what appears to be a large Shou character, a symbol of longevity, surrounded by floral patterns and other traditional Chinese symbols. The border of the rug is adorned with floral designs and possibly bats, which in Chinese culture are symbols of happiness and good luck. The combination of these symbols points to the rug being more than just a decorative item; it likely held cultural significance, possibly used in a household to invoke blessings or as a status symbol.
Material and Craftsmanship:
The rug appears to be hand-knotted, as evidenced by the details visible in the photos. The pile is relatively thick, which is characteristic of many Chinese rugs that were made for durability as well as aesthetic appeal. The colors have maintained their vibrancy, although there may be some signs of wear consistent with age, such as slight fading or areas where the pile is lower. The presence of a thick pile and the quality of the dyes used suggest that this rug was well-crafted, likely intended for use in a home rather than purely for ceremonial purposes.
Hello Linda, the price range reflects typically what this right might be sold for depending on the context/auction/client, etc.
You can also sell it with us directly, you can contact Mearto services and they will help you.
Thank you for the appraisal. I have a question as to why there is such a wide range for the value of $1,000-$3,000?
Also, I am in California and it looks like Catawiki is based in Europe.
Is there some place closer to me where I can sell it?
Thank you!
