Antique chair
Summary: It's a chair that was left to me in a will from my uncle 10 years ago. It was left to him by a friend who was a wealthy Dutch diplomat who resided in London some 30 years ago. When it was left to my uncle it caused a lot of unsavoury disagreement between his offspring and my uncle. For this reason and the fact that he was a keen collector of valuable art, I would like to find out a little more about the history of this chair and to find out whether or not it holds any value? As you can see from the photos, it has probably, at some point, been reupholstered and the wicker looks like it may have also been redone as it is in perfect condition. There are no markings that my untrained eye can see. I hope this is enough information for you to give me some sort of an idea as to what its history may be? Height- 72cm (from floor to back) 58cm (from floor to arm), 62cm long, 61cm depth, 63cm wide.

This is a Victorian era Georgian style caned armchair with later japanning, probably late 19th century and possibly made in the British colonies. A lovely and somewhat unique piece; unfortunately, this is a fairly formal piece of furniture that is not very trendy at the moment so would likely not bring much at auction.
Based on the photographs and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
An Anglo-Indies George III style caned and japanned armchair
Possibly British Colonies, Late 19th Century
With arched crest, the back and sides caned, over-upholstered trapezoidal seat, all on cabriole front legs with ball and claw feet, with later japanning overall
Overall height 28 1/4 inches (72cm); 24 3/4 inches wide (63 cm); 24 inches deep (61cm)
CONDITION: traces of Japanning extant throughout. Caning and upholstery seemingly in good condition and intact and possibly not original.
PROVENANCE: client inherited from uncle, who acquired it from a Dutch diplomat
