Extremely heavy Chinese round stone stool. If I had to guess maybe100 pounds. There are 3 carvings around outside of stool. A dragon, a snake and a rabbit. Around each carving is an indented area with many 1/4" diameter stone bumps. These indented areas reflect a copper-like color filling in between the stone bumps. The stool and carvings are darkish black in color. There are small scraps and spot blemishes where it appears the black color finish is missing. This may have been caused by the stone being rolled across the ground rather than lifted when moved.
The stool is 18" in height, 13" in width at widest point in center, with a 9" wide flat center circle on the top and bottom of the stool.
Hello, this item is a heavy Chinese-style carved stone garden stool or drum-form seat, likely made in the late 20th century as decorative Asian-inspired furniture rather than as an early antique Chinese object. The cylindrical form, rounded barrel profile, raised bead borders, dark stone or composite stone surface, and relief panels with dragon, rabbit, and snake motifs draw on traditional Chinese drum-stool and zodiac imagery. Historic Chinese garden stools were produced in ceramic, wood, stone, and hardwood forms for domestic courtyards and interiors, but this example’s finish, simplified carving, and decorative panel structure place it most securely in the modern export or garden-decorative market.
The stool appears structurally intact and usable, with surface scuffs, scratches, white abrasions, finish losses, and general wear visible on the top and sides, especially from handling or being moved across hard surfaces. Its value is supported by size, weight, decorative appeal, and hand-carved relief detail, but the lack of provenance, inscription, maker, or evidence of substantial age limits its collectibility as Chinese antique furniture. Comparable modern Chinese-style carved stone stools of this size generally sell as decorative furnishings rather than specialist Asian antiques. Fair Market Value: $150 - $350 USD.
