Antique Desk and Chair
16 August 2024
Description

I acquired it in 2016 at an estate sale in Salt Lake City, UT. The owner believed it was a custom piece of furniture, hand made in Morrocco and then moved to the middle east (Iraq). He said it was his understanding that the desk was latter shipped to Utah in the early 2000’s (2004ish). The item does have some wear which can be seen in the photos. The desk is made of wood although I'm not sure what type and the inlay design appears to be consistent with other Moroccan styles I found online. I do not have the key for the locks on the drawers and side cabinets.

What does this mean?

Hi Kathryn,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
This type of mother-of-pearl inlay and mixed woods veneer is consistent with furniture made in Morocco, Syria and other parts of both North Africa and the Middle East, dating back a few hundred years to the present. The double-pedestal desk form was one used from the 18th Century( (initially in England) on but the photos showing the construction and wood (possibly pine or other woods, laminated) tell me it was made in the late 20th Century.
The chair is also of the same vintage.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:

A near vintage Syrian or Moroccan style rosewood veneer and mother-of-pearl inlay double-pedestal desk
late 20th Century
Of rectangular section with overhung straight-edged top and frame fitted with short drawers lifting off two pedestal sections fitted with cabinets. All profusely inlaid with various wood and mother-of-pearl inlay in geometric designs.
Height: 29-1/2 inches; width: 50-3/4 inches; depth 32-1/4 inches
CONDITION: This desk appears to be in good condition with some minor cosmetic issues including lifting and losses to veneers and inlay. Locked, no key.
PROVENANCE: Acquired at a garage or yard sale
$300-500*

together with
