Hi Robin,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
This is a very unusual piece; I am quite well familiar with the circular Chinese bookcases and etageres (see this link: https://auctions.milleabros.com/lots/view/1-1527U7/chinese-hardwood-circular-tabletop-etagere) but have not seen case furniture built into what appears to be a large barrel or cask. I've done an extensive search of my library and online as well; I can't confirm or corroborate the possibility that this was made in Africa, though it is very unlike the large body of African furniture I've worked with in a nearly 30 year career appraising furniture. The joinery of the framing is comparatively modern, suggesting a 20th Century manufacture, possibly even an ingenious cabinetry creation.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
A vintage Asian style elm(?) barrel-form wardrobe
20th Century
Of circular form centering two molded panel hinged doors flanked by demilune hinged doors, all opening to a shelved interior on a rectangular base.
57 inches tall, 53 inches wide, on a base 4 inches high by 24 inches wide
CONDITION: appears to be in good condition
$1,000-1,500*
