Hello,
This item is a French Manufacture d’Armes de Saint-Étienne Model 1874 Gras rifle. This model was introduced as a modification of the Chassepot rifle, and it was widely used in the French army during the late 19th century. It was a single-shot, bolt-action rifle designed to fire metallic cartridges. The inscription “Manufacture D’Armes St Étienne” refers to the Saint-Étienne arms factory, one of the major firearms manufacturers in France during this period. The model “Mle 1874” (Modèle 1874) indicates its production year.
These rifles were later modified and used by various armies worldwide, and they were sometimes adapted for civilian use. Given its history and usage, the Gras rifle is a collectible item, particularly in well-preserved condition. However, the overall value depends on several factors, including condition, historical provenance, and any modifications that may have been made.
