Black wonderful with hand painted scene with dandelion. 29 3/4 x 9 x 10 3/4. Award winning
Goodwill
Good evening, Lynn,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
This form of seating furniture is called a back stool, because it is, essentially, a stool with a back. The black painting is called 'ebonizing' and was a very popular decorative treatment from the mid-late 19th Century through the 20th Century, when this was painted; the stool itself could be earlier but its very difficult to tell that one way or another without examining this in person.
The following auction sales of back stools have been used in researching the fair market value of your stool (I would say that the carving on these examples makes these examples slightly more desirable):
https://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/48500853_renaissance-revival-carved-walnut-backstool - $150
https://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/16509946_a-pair-of-renaissance-revival-style-carved-and-ebonized - $350

Based on the photographs and information provided, and subject to examination, you have a:
A provincial back stool
possibly 19th century with later ebonized and painted decoration
29 3/4 inches hig x 9 inches x 10 3/4 inches
PROVENANCE: purchased at Goodwill; award given for paint decoration
$100-150 (refers to a fair market value for auction purposes; retail or asking price may vary).
Please let us know if you have additional items to appraise, and thank you for using Mearto.
