An Italian Sorrento fretwork hanging shelf featuring intricate open work fretwork and highly detailed marquetry inlays. The shelf features hand-inlaid wood medallions depicting traditional rural Italian life. The central table scene features a description reading “si copia il Francese “ (the French style is being copied)-a classic satirical commentary used by period Sorrento craftsmen poking fun at French furniture trends. There is one crack in the upper left side that does not disturb the fretwork or inlay. The shelf has hinges on the rear, but I’ve never figured out why they’re there.
