It appears very old with Chinese characters on the front, 5 drawers 3/4 by 5 1/2 by8 3/8. The game pieces appear to be ivory with markings in excellent condition. They have ivory faced with possible bamboo base.

Dear Mary,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. So that I may best assist you, can you please upload a few pictures of the ''skin'' of one of the stones. I identified some bone structure on some pieces but I need to be sure about the large amount of stones before proceeding. More pictures of structure is welcome since its sometimes not so easy to make them I know.
Thanks
Simon Breider
Dear Mary,
The stones are made of bone and Bamboo so no Ivory involved and no issues here.
It must contain at least 144 tiles but some sets can have more. Its a nice set in original chest. Price ranges vary but the bone and bamboo versions in wooden case, like yours, can be sold in the the price range of $ 400 to $ 700. Your set is made in ca. 1940 and that period in China is called Republic period. Its not that old but in China interest in this period, just before the Mao regime is growing steadily.
I hope these added photos help.
Also was wondering if age could be determined as I know there are issues with selling ivory that is not of a certain age.
