This jar is glazed on the outside (red) and on the inside (green). It has a top made of wood or bamboo, and a wooden stand/base. On the bottom there are some indistinct markings. Some damage to the top and very fine flaws in exterior glaze. Otherwise in very good condition.
About 10 inches from bottom of jar to top of cover (not including base). Approximately 10 inches at widest point.
This is part of a collection inherited from my mother that she acquired while living with my father in Malaysia in the 1980’s. She bought antiques, art and ceramics in Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong during that period.
Hello Mary,
Based on the images, this is a remarkable red glazed Chinese pottery ginger jar, from circa late 18th century. This clear-glaze base encircled by a thick foot, the exterior surfaces covered in a thick and viscous uniformly crazed red.
Ginger jars were also often given as gifts to the Emperor. The use of the Chinese character for “double happiness,” which you'll find on many blue and white ginger jars, suggests that the jars were often given on special occasions, such as weddings. Just like the marriage, they were intended to last for a lifetime.
Good condition.
