Hi Michael,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
These chairs are Moorish Revival style carved and caned (probably walnut) dining chairs; I've not been able to find others similar enough upon which to base an attribution but they would have been made from the late 19th Century (1880s-1930s) at a time when interior design aesthetics looked back towards historical styles; they could have been made in either England or the US and your family's history may dictate where they were acquired.
Such chairs look great around an old dining table. This set would normally have had two large armchairs to accompany the four side chairs; the presence of a matching rocking side chair is unusual. Related sets - 4 side chairs and 1 armchair - of comparable style and age that have been offered at auction in recent years have sold for fair market values ranging from $400-1,200; because your set has the matching rocking chair, the value is $500-1,500.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
An antique or vintage set of 6 Moorish revival style carved and caned walnut dining chairs
Comprising one armchair, four side chairs and one rocking chair, American or English, late 19th/early 20th Century
Each with arched caned insert in the back and trapezoidal caned insert in the seats.
Side chairs: each 17 3/4 inch wide X 37 inch tall
Armchair: 22 inch wide X 42 1/2 inch tall
Rocking chair: 17 3/4 inch wide X 37 inch tall
CONDITION: With minor wear commensurate to age and use
PROVENANCE: Inherited
$ 500-1,500 for the set*
*represents a fair-market value for auction purposes; retail or asking price may vary.
