My fater brought this back from germany after WWII. It is a Kowalczeski bronze with his name engraved on the back of the bronze base. Excellent condition except two minor ships in the marble base on the upper back corners.
9" X 5" bronze statue mounted on a 2 3/4" square marble base
Hello, this item is a small bronze figure signed Kowalczeski, probably a late 19th to early 20th-century European academic bronze after the heroic or allegorical male nude tradition. The figure is shown standing with one arm raised and the other holding a short sword or dagger, mounted on a dark square marble base. The modeling of the torso, back, limbs, and head shows competent anatomical study, while the dark brown patina and integral bronze plinth are consistent with decorative European bronzes produced around 1890 to 1920. The engraved signature on the bronze base gives the piece some attribution interest, though the photographs do not provide enough evidence to connect it securely to a major listed sculptor without further documentation.
The sculpture appears to be in good overall condition, with minor chips visible to the marble base but no major breaks, losses, or structural damage visible to the bronze figure. Its market value depends on whether the signature can be linked to a known sculptor with auction records, but as presented it should be valued as a good-quality signed European decorative bronze rather than a confirmed high-value masterwork. Small signed bronzes of this type generally perform best when the patina is original, the casting is sharp, and the base is intact. Based on the visible quality, size, condition, and current decorative bronze market, the fair market value is $500 to $1,200 USD.
