Oil on panel, 12” x 20” signed Arthur V. Diehl 1923. Framed 2” gold- metal leaf, late 20th c.
This is part of my family’s estate, has been in the home for at least 50 years. I don’t know how it was acquired.
Dear Ann,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The presented object appears to be a painting made in oil paint on panel with the measurements of 12 x 20 inches. The painting depicts a beach landscape with dunes. It was made by the artist Arthur Vidal DIEHL (1870-1929) and is dated 1923. Diehl mainly painted maritime motifs and harbor scenes.
Works by this artist were recently offered and sold on the international auction market.
This piece is in good condition and there is no serious damage visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 700 to 1.500 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.
With kind regards,
Georg
Dear Ann,
Thank you for the information and I changed the estimation text. Skinner is definitely a professional auction house that reaches out to many customers. In my opinion, this is a natural and catching motif in comparison to the architectural harbor views.
With kind regards,
Georg
Hi Georg. Thanks for the helpful appraisal. My only comment is that I think the painting is literally on a pressed paper pulp panel- not on canvas mounted to a board- and if I'd sent better photos I think you would agree. I hope that doesn't affect the value and I doubt it would affect it much (since it's not all that valuable anyway!) I'm wondering if you can advise me on the best way to sell it. I was thinking of asking Skinners but wonder if there's a more Cape Cod based auction gallery, since I think Diehl worked mostly in Provincetown area) where buyers for work like this might go. I have another, smaller A.V. Diehl painting too. Any advice on selling this would be appreciated. best wishes- and thanks again, Ann
