signed, possibly Japanese painting or ?? (internet search says signature is Shoun) of small pine, blossom branches, bamboo leaves in planter? Excellent condition, matted and framed
+/- 12" x 16"
Hello, this item is a small Japanese-style botanical composition, most likely a 20th-century decorative painting or print on paper rather than a traditional woodblock print. The image shows a formal arrangement of pine, plum or blossom branches, bamboo leaves, and chrysanthemum-like flowers in a shallow vessel, which reflects the Japanese “Three Friends of Winter” vocabulary of pine, bamboo, and plum, symbols of endurance, refinement, and seasonal renewal. The signature and red seal at the lower right support an Asian origin or Asian-inspired production, but the available photographs do not allow a firm reading of the artist’s name or confirmation that it is by a listed Japanese artist. The smooth areas of color and clean outlines could indicate a hand-colored print, stencil-based work, or decorative painting, rather than a carved ukiyo-e style woodblock.
The work appears in good decorative condition, with no major tears, stains, or losses visible through the glass, though the mat and frame prevent full inspection of the paper margins and reverse. The gold-toned frame and matting make it suitable as decorative Asian art, but the market value remains modest unless an identifiable artist, gallery label, or original invoice confirms a recognized name. Based on the images, subject, condition, modest size of approximately 12 x 16 inches, and current market demand for unsigned or partially identified Japanese-style botanical works, the fair market value is $80 to $180 USD.
Additional note: initial research shows the signature reads Shoun and character in seal is a dragon

Hello Sarah,
Thank you for uploading the clearer signature and seal images. They are much easier to examine and they do help refine the assessment.
The inscription does appear consistent with a reading of “Shōun” (祥雲), or a very similar pronunciation, and the accompanying red seal is compatible with an artist’s seal used in Japanese painting traditions. However, “Shōun” was used by multiple artists and artisans across different periods, and without additional provenance, labels on the reverse, or publication records, it is not possible to attribute this work confidently to a specific listed painter. The dragon-like motif you noted within the seal is an interesting decorative element, but by itself it is not sufficient to establish authorship or significantly increase the value.
Based on the improved images, I believe the original valuation remains appropriate. The work continues to appear to be an attractive Japanese decorative botanical composition in good condition, but there is still insufficient evidence to associate it with a documented master whose works command substantially higher prices. I would therefore maintain the fair market value at $80 to $180 USD. If future research uncovers a documented attribution through a gallery label, original purchase documentation, or a specialist in Japanese signatures, the valuation could certainly be revisited.
Thank you again for providing the additional photographs.
Best,
I do have a clear image of the signature, where should I upload it?
