What does this mean?

Hello, this item is a Japanese-style sword, most likely a katana, featuring a curved steel blade measuring 28 inches in length and 1.5 inches in width. The sword retains its wooden scabbard (saya) and a simple tsuba (guard), both showing signs of wear and age. The blade itself appears polished, though with areas of patination and possible oxidation, suggesting an older piece. The form and dimensions correspond to a traditional samurai weapon, though the fittings are relatively modest, which is consistent with utilitarian swords rather than highly decorative ceremonial ones.

The provenance states it was purchased in 2003 in Hong Kong with the impression that it was an older piece. While some swords sold in flea markets may be reproductions, the construction and now the signed tang (mei) visible here suggest it is a 20th-century example, most likely from the Shōwa period (1926–1945), possibly made before or during WWII. The presence of a signature indicates it was produced by a smith rather than as an unsigned mass-produced sword, which increases its collectability and value. In today’s market, signed Shōwa-period katanas with scabbard generally range between 1,200 and 2,500 USD, with higher estimates possible if the mei can be attributed to a known or reputable swordsmith.
