Barry Entner Hand Blown Glass Sculpture
20 August 2025
Description

This perfect museum quality hand blown sculpture I bought in Cambria, California in 1989 for $1,800 from the Seekers Gallery. It has been a center piece in our home for 35 years, we are moving and will not be taking it with us. The item is signed by Barry Entner and dated 1989 which I have shown in the last photo but difficult to see and capture a picture of.

Hi Ed,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

According to his website (entnerglass.com), Barry Entner was born November 1, 1959 in Brookline, Massachusetts; he initially pursued psychology at Tulane University, where art and sculpture passion took root. He studied under Gene Koss during college, then apprenticed with David Goldhagen, and further honed his craft at Penland School of Crafts (with Stephen Dee Edwards) and Massachusetts College of Art (with John Wolfrum). In 1985, he co-founded Brimstone Glassworks, later establishing his independent design studio in Rhinebeck, NY, in 1997. .

His pieces are known for “otherworldly” forms, vibrant, tropical palettes, and conveying energetic movement in solid glass sculptures. He does not use conventional blown glass. Instead, he developed a unique steam-blown technique: inserting a wet cherry-wood cone into hot glass to generate steam pressure and shape the form—giving work distinctive shapes otherwise unattainable. He is known for viewing each glass piece like a “paint stroke”—individual elements that, when combined, form a composed whole. Every detail—from color and form to lighting—is meticulously planned, often beginning with in-depth sketches. Lighting is integral to his work. He engineers pieces with built-in illumination—LED, halogen, or cold-cathode—designed to enhance the sculpture’s interaction with space.

If you purchased this from a gallery or dealer, you will have bought at the top of the market; the values Mearto provides are fair-market and based on auction records rather than retail prices.

Comparably sized and shaped pieces of similar vintage that have sold at auction recently have achieved prices ranging from $150 to $300.
