Believed to be a 1798 pattern scottish officers basket hilted broadsword. Blade is 29" and basket hilt 4 3/4" made with brass. Grip is made of wood. Multiple breaks on the basket hilt. stamped, ERSKINE MAITLAND, other ER CHAMPION.

The presented object appears to be a British 1798 pattern basket-hilted broad sword which was in use for Scottish regiments of the British army. The engraving "Erskine Maitland" names the former owner of this sword.
This piece is in medium condition and there is no serious damage visible in the images provided.
