Hi James,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Victorian furniture (roughly 1837–1901, during Queen Victoria’s reign) is defined by richness, display, and revivalist influences. Key hallmarks include ornamentation & form with heavy, solid proportions with an emphasis on grandeur, abundant carving in the form of scrolls, foliage, flowers, shells, and Gothic or Rococo motifs and turned and / or spiral legs, bulbous shapes, and deeply molded edges. Mahogany, walnut, rosewood, and later oak were the predominant primary woods, with veneers and contrasting inlays providing additional ornamentation. Pieces employed thick upholstery with deep button tufting in fabrics such as velvet, brocade, damask, and horsehair stuffing around springs were used to emphasize comfort and status.
The Victorian style was revived during the Hollywood Regency period, which emerged in the 1930s–1950s, particularly in Southern California, blending classical forms with modern glamour. It’s defined less by historical accuracy and more by drama, polish, and luxury.
The English Queen Anne period dates to circa 1702–1714 and had an entirely different aesthetic, bridging the heavier and more austere styles of the earlier William and Mary period (late 17th Century) and the lighter and more exuberant Georgian and Chippendale designs of the rest of the 18th Century and early 19th Century.
If this is mid 19th Century and true Victorian, it has a value of between $400 and $600 in the secondary (auction) market. The market today is defined less by historians and people buying furniture for its academic importance and more for a look so there's little difference in value - perhaps around $100 less in value if it is examined in person and determined to be a Hollywood Regency example.
