Bentwood chairs with original caning. Both have tags that are flaking off but say "J. W. Mason Co. 426 Pearl Street, New York, NY". My mother bought them in the early 90s or late 80s in upstate New York along with a round table with bentwood legs or column.
Bought some time late 80s or early 90s. My mother does not remember from whom but was told they are Thonet. I do not see any marks that are associated with Thonet.
Dear Catherine,
Thank you for your request and your patience. The apprised object is a chair in the so-called bentwood technique. The chair is constructed out of hot steam-bent beech bars. This chair has the label of the J. W. Mason & Co company which was established in the year 1859. This chair was possibly made in the last third of the 19th century.
This piece is in damaged condition and there are many little damages visible.
An estimation would be between 40 to 80 USD.
This estimation is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and vary.
With best regards,
Georg
