Carved Black Forest French bulldog? Ink well with antique glass eyes
Found the other day in a local second hand store.
Hi Jackie,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
This is not from the Black Forest region of Bavaria, Germany and Switzerland; those carvings do not have as much painting and the quality of the carving is very different (for a selection of "typical" Black Forest carvings, check out this link: https://ciscosgallery.com/collections/antique-brienz-black-forest-carvings-bears)
If you'd like for your appraisal to include dimensions, which is customary, please forward in the comments section - at your convenience - the height and length (nose to tail) and I'll update this ASAP
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
A Victorian carved and painted French Bulldog's head form inkwell
American, English or European, mid 19th Century
with glass eyes
(DIMENSIONS)
CONDITION: lacking inkwell; cracklure and some paint losses throughout.
PROVENANCE: acquired at a second-hand store
$30-50*
