The screen belong to my mother. I do not know where she acquired it. It’s a six panel screen with multiple color, what I believe to be soapstone inlay, and of pearl accents in some of the birds tail feathers. The hinges are unusual and the feet of the screen are encased in a metal protective sleeve.
Approximately 96 inches wide and 92 inches high
Hello, this item is a six-panel Asian screen, approximately 96 inches wide and 92 inches high, crafted in black lacquer with applied soapstone, hardstone, and mother-of-pearl inlay. The design depicts birds and flowering branches in relief, arranged in a traditional Chinese decorative style often associated with the late Qing to mid-20th-century export period. The craftsmanship and material combination indicate mid-20th-century Chinese manufacture, intended for export to Western interiors.
The screen’s condition appears good, with minor surface wear consistent with age. Comparable mid-century lacquer screens with mixed-stone and shell inlay of this size and quality typically sell between 1,200 and 1,800 USD at auction.
