What does this mean?

Hi Dražen,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

Based on the design and typical production of these pins, it dates to approximately the 1960s–1980s because of the metal with enamel inlay, a style that was used during that period; based on this particular style, I would narrow that range to late 1960s-early 1970s. While the blue-and-white quartered roundel with “BMW” above has been used for decades, the simple enamel stickpin format was especially popular for brand merchandise beginning in the 1950s.

Original stick pins will be marked “Ges. Gesch.” (an abbreviation of the German phrase “Gesetzlich Geschützt”, which means "legally protected") and/or "Germany". I can't see any of those inscriptions in the photo but it's too blurry to tell.

These pins were made in fairly large quantity and are not considered rare; it's likely to have greater sentimental value than market value.

If this stick pin is original, it will have a fair market (secondary market, for auction purposes) of $15-25 and a retail (primary market) value of about $40. If it's not an original pin but a later reproduction, the value would be about one-quarter to one-half that. I've evaluated this on the presumption that it's original.

Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:

A vintage BMW enameled stickpin
made in Germany, circa 1960s-70s
1 cm x 1 cm
CONDITION: this appears to be in good condition, with some oxidation to the back.
PROVENANCE: Inherited
$15-25*
