Hi Robin,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The values Mearto provides are Fair-Market Values, for Auction purposes. We rely heavily on the prices achieved at auction for works and go from there. In the instance where the artist is still living (as is the case with Reverend Johnny Ace), there often are no auction records. In that scenario, we will look to galleries who carry works by the artist to see how much works are being sold for but galleries are using Retail Values, which are almost always more than fair-market values, sometimes by as many as 2-3 times as much.
In the case of Ace, Roots Up Gallery seems to be carrying his works; a few are listed on this website with an asking price of $235 (https://www.rootsupgallery.com/reverend-johnny-ace) and have provided the basis for my valuation here.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
Reverend Johnny Ace (American, 20th/21st Century)
"Marxism-Lennonism," dated 3/97
collage on board
13 inches high by 10 1/2 inches wide
$150-250*
*represents a fair-market value for auction purposes; retail or asking price may vary.
