Hi Susan,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Demétre (Dimitri) Chiparus (1886–1947) was one of the most important sculptors of the Art Deco era, best known for his elegant, theatrical figures that perfectly embody the glamour of the 1920s–30s. Born in Romania (then part of Austria-Hungary), he worked primarily in Paris, training at the École des Beaux-Arts and under sculptor Antonin Mercié.
This model is titled "Femme au perroquet" and was made as a lifetime bronze in the 1920s or 1930s, it was also recast, both during his life and posthumously. The lifetime bronze examples are a bit larger than yours, suggesting yours is a recast, which usually sell at auction for between $300 and $500.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
After Demetre Chiparus (Romanian, 1886-1947)
Femme au perroquet (Lady with parrot), recast
bronze
signed "Chiparus"
6-1/4 inches high, on an 18-inch-long black marble or onyx base.
CONDITION: This appears to be in good condition
PROVENANCE: Acquired at auction
