I have in my possession a bust of Abraham Lincoln by sculptor Peter David Edstrom. The sculpture is engraved with Edstrom's signature and dated 1926. From the Lincoln Memorial Shrine website: Peter David Edstrom began his career in Europe before immigrating to the United States. Of his many accomplishments, Edstrom is recognized as a founder of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. He was a featured speaker for the Contemporary Club during his visit to Redlands in 1923. A specialist in historical busts, Edstrom chose Lincoln as the subject of two works in 1926. The other is currently on display at Mission Inn in Riverside. I apparently have a third Lincoln bust that is quite identical to the other two previous known items.
The dimensions are approximately 27" H x 17.25" W x 13" D
Hi Duff,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Peter David Edstrom (1873–1938) was a Swedish-American sculptor known for his classical and realistic style. Born in Sweden, he immigrated to the United States at a young age and later returned to Europe to study art, particularly in Paris. Edstrom became especially noted for his portrait busts and public monuments, often working in marble and bronze.
His works often depicted prominent cultural and political figures of his time. Although not as widely known today, Edstrom contributed significantly to the development of sculpture in America during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
There have been other ceramic and / or plaster busts of Abraham Lincoln by Peter David Edstrom that have sold at auction, typically carrying estimates of $800-1,200.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
