Carnelian brooch with lady and chariot, rectangular 14k gold
unknown
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
It is a beautiful carnelian brooch. Such antique jewellery are being offered at auction on a regular basis.
The design of the brooch is very elegant and special. It is detailed and very refined. The size of the brooch is good. The metal work of 14 kt gold surrounding the carnelian has some fine details and adds a nice touch to the brooch. The fact that gold is used also underlines the fact that this is a highend cameo brooch. This particular type of jewellery was very popular in the late 1800s and early 1900s. You see cameo brooches made in the middle of the 1900s too however the quality of these later brooches leaves much behind. This brooch was made in the last half of the 1800s.
It is difficult to say where the brooch was made as they were popular world wide. The decoration however makes one think of Italy and Greece and the southern part of Europe. It is not the most expensive kind of jewellery, but this particular brooch is a very charming piece and I believe that this lovely brooch would attract the attention of both collectors and dealers if it came up for auction and may even surprise in a positive direction price-wise.
The estimate provided is for a well-advertised specialised online jewellery auction, where I believe the cameo brooch has the best chance of realising its fullest potential. However, there is no measurement for the sentimental value you might attach to the brooch. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and vary.
Please let me know if you have any additional questions. I’m happy to help.
