Carpets 15Foot by 26 inch red runner
Been in the family for 40 years
Hello Chris,
I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal,
Considering the photographs, overall pattern, knot density and the colours, I concluded that this is an Entirely Hand Knotted Baluch Rug, dating back to the period between 1940-1960. The Baluchis are a nomadic ethnic group divided among Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan and they're largely known for their traditional skills in rug weaving. This piece seems more like it was originated from Baluchis of Afghanistan. But most of the population lives in Pakistan today, it is hard to determine for sure since the tradition and the decoration is almost the same in Baluch rugs regardless of the country. These pieces are almost always knotted in small sizes as we can see in your piece's case. Traditionally, the carpets of the Baluchis were made of sheep and goat wool from their own herds. Modern carpets might have a cotton warp due to commercial resons. Like all carpets made by nomads, Baluch carpets are simple and robust in technique and decoration but still reflects an incredible decor to the spectator. Your piece's colour palette is especially harmonious and blends the decoration to each other perfectly. We can detect "Scorpion", "Human", "Star" and "Leaf" motifs alongisde your piece. Also on upper ends we can observe two hand motifs, each on both sides of the piece. In good condition with small signes of use. Wool on wool.
Entirely hand knotted.
