Pair of cast iron garden urns/ planters with figurals such as cherubs, goatheads, garland, etc. Each urn is two piece, an urn/planter and a pedestal base. They are in very good condition. Have been painted, probably several times. Measurements are 48" height, 30" across. Can not find a Foundry mark but I would be interested to know of comparables, the Foundry which made them (if it can be identified), date made, country or origin (where made). NOTE that there is a very similar pair of putto and goathead urns currently offered on Ebay(a Los Angeles seller) WITHOUT pedestals; one of the cherubs feet are missing on the Ebay for sale ones. Ephasize: appraisal for the PAIR; both are the same. Thank you.
Owned by a local woman for over 25 years. She said she bought them from an architectural salvage shop that sold a lot of antique metal work, castings, sculptures etc, so she maintains the pair was old when she purchased them over 25 years ago.
Dear Geo,
Thank you for your request. The presented object is a pair of garden vases or urn with the measurements of 48 x 30 inches. The pair was made out of cast iron which was later lacquered green. This protective stain was probably applied in the last third of the 20th century. The urns are decorated with bacchants, goat heads, and festoons. It could be made in the late 19th or early 20th century. Sadly no makers mark of a label is visible to identify the maker. Usually, such big and elaborated cast iron pieces are hallmarked so it is remarkable that this big and elaborated piece was not hallmarked.
This piece is in good condition and there are no serious damages visible.
A base auction estimation would be between 1000 to 200 USD.
This estimation is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and vary.
With kind regards,
Georg
