Ceramic sphere with 3 raised monkeys
29 May 2025
Description

Decorative clay ball shaped object with 3 prancing (spider?) monkeys. No makers mark from what I can see. Appears to be old based on the wear of some of the monkey faces but overall good condition. Colors vary from multiple browns to grey. I originally thought it was African but after consulting an expert they felt it wasn't from Africa.

What does this mean?

Hello, this item is a decorative clay ball-shaped sculpture featuring three prancing monkeys, possibly spider monkeys, carved or molded in low relief. Measuring about 6 inches in diameter, the piece displays earthy tones ranging from browns to greys, with surface wear suggesting some age but still in good overall condition. While the origin was initially thought to be African, closer stylistic assessment suggests it may be from Latin America or Southeast Asia, where monkey motifs in decorative arts are common, often symbolizing playfulness, mischief, or spiritual significance.

Given its decorative nature, lack of maker’s marks, and assuming it is a 20th-century artisan or tourist piece, the estimated market value typically falls between $100 and $250 USD. If the item proves to be older or linked to a specific cultural tradition or maker, the value could increase, but verification through material analysis or expert consultation would be necessary. Its charm lies in its whimsical, sculptural form, making it appealing for collectors of ethnographic or folk art objects.
