Charleville revolutionary and civil war era with flags and eagle

Description

Good condition considering age and use. I really don’t have any history on it. I’d really like to know more about it though. Also I’m willing to part ways with it as well. Thank you for your time.

What does this mean?

Hello,

This item is a Charleville musket, a type commonly used during the American Revolutionary War and in the Civil War era, as evidenced by the markings, style, and overall design of the piece. The Charleville muskets were originally produced in France and were a major contribution to American military efforts. This particular musket features a distinct eagle with flags motif, a symbol of pride and nationalism, often painted or engraved on such pieces to signify their military association. Given its significant length of 55 inches, it likely belongs to the M1763 or M1777 variant, known for their long barrels and flintlock firing mechanisms.

Upon reviewing the photos, the condition appears consistent with an antique firearm of this age. The wooden stock shows some wear and patina, which is typical for a musket used in combat or training. The metal barrel and lock plate also exhibit some oxidation and age marks, further confirming its period authenticity. The presence of identifiable stamps and symbols on the metal parts of the gun, such as “V” and other armory markings, provide clues about its original manufacturing place and military service history.
