Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
It is a beautiful vintage handbag. Such vintage handbags and accessories are being offered at auction on a regular basis.
The handbag has a very smart and classic design. It is made of exotic fur which may need a permission to sell today as some species have become extinct and are therefore protected by the Washington convention law preventing trade with these particular species. However in order to determine the actual species the handbag would have to be examined in real life.
Handbags and accessories that obtain the highest prices at auction are made by well-known and high-quality designer brands like Chanel, Hermes and Louis Vuitton. When a handbag is without a designer name the value drops despite good quality and use of material and smart design. This is the reason why the estimate on this handbag is fairly low compared to the design and use of materials. And also due to the condition of the handbag that bears some signs of use and wear. It was made in the middle of the 1900s as you state yourself.
The estimate provided is for a well-advertised specialised online fashion accessories auction, where I believe the handbag has the best chance of realising its fullest potential. However, there is no measurement for the sentimental value you might attach to the vintage handbag. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and vary.
Please let me know if you have any additional questions. I’m happy to help.
Thank you
Thank you for your comment. I am afraid I do not know what company or designer the M is associated with.
As for authentication I would suggest that you contact: [email protected]
Kind regards
Thank you so much for your apparaisal. I bought this handbag at a thrift store in 1982 or 83 for $5.00! And I have always believed it was authentic fur. Could you direct me to someone who could personally examine the bag? Also, it does have an “M” stamped inside and I wondered what designer this may be associated with.
Again, thank you!
