The builder who worked on the rebuild in 1966 of the metropolitan opera house gave my mother a cherub face from the outside of the building as well as a brass devils face door knob.
OBrian construction gave the pieces to my mother who was the best friend of his sister. They were clothing buyers for the old Bullocks Dept store and travelled to New York 4 x year for work. Mom loved New York and Mr OBrian was a friend I had the cherub head framed years ago and have the devils door knob in a drawer. Just wondered if they are worth anything.
Dear Denice,
Thank you for your request. The presented objects are a convolute of decorations probably from the metropolitan opera house NY. We have one face of a cherub or putto probably made out of a white metal alloy and a doorknob shaped like a so-called leave mask or Green Man. I attach you a link to this very interesting cultural historical motif. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_Man). The Metropolitan Opera House opened on October 22, 1883, so these pieces date shortly before. We estimate this as a convolute.
This piece is in good condition and there are no serious damages visible.
An estimation would be between 200 to 400 USD.
This estimation is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and vary.
With best regards,
Georg
