The chest is about 3ft by 4ft long, the wood seems very old don't know what type, the nails that hold it together seem hand made as does the lock and handles.

Hi Ken,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. So that I may best assist you, can you please upload an image or two of the inside of the chest?
Thanks!
Delia
Thanks, Ken!
These chests usually had a small compartment set in, adjacent to one side or the other, running the full depth (front to back) of the chest; for candles, papers, etc., and usually with a hinged lid. It looks as though the inverted "L" visible in one photograph might have been where that once was but is no longer there - are there corresponding marks on the other side?
The top looks to be oak; I can't tell through the stain if the body of the chest is oak as well walnut was commonly used, as was English pine (deal) and mahogany. This is pretty clearly English and 18th Century...what in the trade we call "Georgian". There isn't much of a market for these today but they have a small following and if you were to offer this at auction, it would appropriate be identified as:
A Georgian oak and (walnut or mahogany) dome-top chest
English, 18th Century
The hinged dome top over an open compartment (now lacking candlebox?), with wrought iron side handles.
36 inches high by 48 inches long
$150-200*
